Summer on the Slovenian Riviera: A Journey of Discovery and Delight
The Slovenian Riviera, a hidden gem along the Adriatic Sea, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and culinary delights. As I ventured through this picturesque region, I was captivated by its charm and the warm hospitality of its people. From the rolling hills of Istria to the vibrant coastal towns, every moment was a revelation.
One of the highlights of my trip was staying at Kmetija Medljan, a farm that has been in the Kodarin family for generations. The peaceful atmosphere, the delicious homemade breakfast, and the warm hospitality of Marina and Marko made me feel right at home. The farm's proximity to the coast and the stunning views of the salt pans were simply breathtaking.
The Saltworks Museum, housed in three former salt-workers' houses, provided a fascinating insight into the region's salt-making history. The interactive displays and the abandoned pans were a testament to the region's rich past. The Istrian salt, prized for its quality and whiteness, is still harvested by hand in the working part of the salt pans, and its delicate, slightly sweet taste is a delight to the senses.
The Venetian influence is evident in Piran, one of Slovenia's most beautiful seaside towns. The elegant painted houses, the Italian-inspired culinary scene, and the rich history of the town make it a must-visit destination. The Belvedere hotel, located at the top of a hill, offers excellent seafood and sweeping views of Trieste, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch.
Izola, another charming coastal town, manages to be both laid-back and vibrant at the same time. The DeGrassi hotel, with its supremely comfortable rooms, is the perfect base for exploring the town. The Ljubljanska Ulica, with its artists' workshops, pink and peach houses, and colourful bunting, is a delightful place to wander and soak up the local atmosphere.
The food and wine scene in Izola is a delight, with artisan producers and award-winning wines to sample. Nina Golob, from the tourist board, took me on a tour of some of the region's best producers, including Tilen Praprotnik, who is dedicated to reviving indigenous grape varieties, and Korenika & Moškon, where we tasted different varieties of olive oil. The food market, held monthly from April to October, is a great place to sample local produce and award-winning wines.
